Rise in people spitting at police officers since Covid-19

Steady increase in attacks over past five years

More people have been spitting at on-duty police officers since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

It's as there's been a steady increase in reported attacks on officers over the past five years, with a sharp rise over summer.

A statement from police says the main culprits are 'younger people'.

Superintendent Steve Maddocks says it's a horrible experience, even if there's no intent to physically harm an officer:

Meanwhile, an Onchan MHK has organised a public meeting in her constituency, alongside police to discuss any community concerns.

Julie Edge says it's an opportunity for people to raise any concerns about policing, with mental health issues a growing problem.

The meeting takes place at the Hub Community Centre in Onchan on 1 October from 7.30pm.
