Rodent requests in capital down 50 per cent

DEFA says pest control calls for outside areas have dropped

Requests for assistance with rodents in outside areas of Douglas are down 50 per cent compared to this time last year.

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture has also confirmed the number of complaints about vermin in inside areas, in the capital, is the same as December 2021.

In Peel, and the west of the Island, there have been no more complaints than usual for this time of year.

Government has confirmed the position after Manx Radio listeners – and Douglas residents - highlighted concerns about a possible increase in activity due to waste disposal changes.

Government has three pest control officers who respond to issues with rodents in and around domestic premises as part of efforts to reduce the risk of disease.

It says the staff are ‘normally busy’ during winter as animals move in from fields and hedgerows to seek shelter, warmth and food.

Householders are being urged to ensure they don’t attract rodents to their gardens or houses by properly disposing of food waste and maintaining their property.

Anyone who needs to report issues is asked to contact DEFA on 01624 685894 or by emailing ehenquiries@gov.im.
