Safeguarding the past or 'destroying the future'

Chief Minister questions planning decisions

The Chief Minister has criticised planning decisions he has deemed to be "preventing progress".

Speaking to Manx Radio, Alfred Cannan expressed disappointment that another major redevelopment plan was quashed this week by the Planning Committee.

Following the failed bid, the company behind the plans to redevelop the quayside in Douglas said the decision contradicts government’s plans for Brownfield redevelopment.

Mr Cannan agreed, stating it is not in line with the government's Draft Economic Plan.

Indeed, the failed North Quay plan is the latest in a trend of bids to redevelop registered buildings into more modern alternatives that have failed.

Mr Cannan hit out at these decisions, saying they are "preventing progress".

He stated that whilst we need to safeguard our Island's past, we also need to make sure we protect its future, and its sustainability:

The government's Draft Economic Strategy public consultation, which addresses issues such as redevelopment, is open until midnight tonight, and can be found HERE.
