Sentence date set for man who spat blood at PC

35-year-old's advocate describes it as 'reckless'

A Douglas man will be sentenced in January after admitting spitting blood at a police officer.

Dean Anthony Whitehead, of Heather Crescent, admitted the assault, and being drunk and disorderly, during an appearance at Douglas Courthouse.

Police were called to Tramman Park in Douglas on 30 September to reports of a suspected burglary – once there they were approached by the 35-year-old who was concerned for the occupant.

He was slurring and became agitated and aggressive towards the officers – they asked him to leave whilst conducting their enquiries but Whitehead refused and became agitated and aggressive.

When he exited into the courtyard he continued to be ‘verbally aggressive’ before running away from officers; when they stopped him and tried to arrest him, in the early hours of 1 October, he actively resisted.

Whitehead was taken to the floor to be restrained – he then spat at the female PC with a ‘significant’ amount of spittle landing on her trousers.

His advocate told the court her client had been spitting out the blood caused by an injury to his tooth telling the court it was ‘reckless’.

A social enquiry report has been requested before he’s sentenced on 3 January – he’s been bailed until that date.
