Serious concern over possible job losses

Losing almost two-thirds of the staff who look after the Island's historical railways would be a huge blow, as the 34 workers who keep them running already struggle to keep up.

That's the view of Robert Hendry of the Isle of Man Tram and Railway Preservation Society who says the rolling stock is in the worst condition he's seen it in nearly 60 years.

It was announced yesterday (Tuesday) up to 22 workers from the Department of Community, Culture and Leisure could be let go over the next two years.

Mr Hendry feels the alternative, outsourcing work, is not good for the railways' long-term future:
