Service of remembrance to mark Winter Hill crash

64th anniversary of UK's worst high ground aviation accident

A service of remembrance will be held in St John’s today to mark the 64th anniversary of the Winter Hill plane crash.

It’s being organised by the Rotary Club of Douglas and will take place at 11am in Cooil y Ree Park.

Thirty-five Manx residents died on Winter Hill in Lancashire on 27 February 1958 in, what remains, the UK’s worst high ground aviation accident.

Of the 42 people who took off from Ronaldsway Airport just seven survived the crash less than an hour later.

The plane was carrying a party of local motor traders, and associated colleagues, who were due to visit a battery factory in Manchester.

As well as remembering those who died today’s service will also give thanks to the residents of Horwich who helped rescue survivors and provided support to those who lost loved ones.

Members of the Horwich Rotary Club were among those involved in helping in the aftermath – each year since a wreath has been laid by the club at the top of Winter Hill.

An exhibition is also taking place at the Horwich Heritage Centre until 4 March - Stuart Whittle is the chairman:
