Shoprite: Island reacts to Tesco takeover

All nine stores sold to UK supermarket chain

It's feared more than 60 head office jobs could be at risk at Shoprite following the announcement of the Tesco takeover.

While store employees will be transferred it's understood there are a number of potential redundancies outside the stores.

The supermarket chain has purchased the Manx brand's nine stores on the Island; we'll see signs above the doors begin to change over the next nine months.
These people, shopping in Shoprite in Douglas, told Manx Radio they were surprised:

Douglas North MHK John Wannenburgh says, potential redundancies aside, a number of head office employees will be affected immediately.

In a post on social media, he writes: "Circa 280 staff in the stores and warehouse will move across to Tesco. Circa 60 staff at head office across finance, marketing and buying will be put on notice of redundancy and 13 will be immediately affected."

Meanwhile, in the wake of the announcement, Manx greengrocers Robinson's put out a call to all local producers for new products and ideas it can support.

Douglas North MHK David Ashford says he's concerned about the impact on other local traders and hopes government will engage with Tesco to ensure Manx businesses don't suffer as a result.
