'Small act of solidarity could force change'

Amnesty activists push 'Write for Rights' campaign

Activists on the Isle of Man are asking the public to make a small act of solidarity, which could help fight cruelty, injustice, and human rights violations

The Island's branch of Amnesty International is taking part in a global campaign called 'Write for Rights', where letters are send to those suffering from human rights abuses .

Nearly 5 million were sent last year, pressuring governments to change laws, freeing four people from prison and forcing authorities to address violations.

From today (17 Nov) between 12pm and 3 the public can write and send the letters at Shakti Man in Ramsey, and again from 10 am tomorrow (18 Nov).

The recipients of this years letters include a water rights campaigner, a man tortured and imprisoned for criticising the government in Chad, and peace activists facing trial in an Israeli military court.

Other sessions are on Saturday 25 of November at the Tower House Atrium cafe in Douglas, and on December the 16th in the foyer at Castletown Civic Centre.
