Smart meters could help control increased demand on power grid

Described as 'building block' in future-proofing our energy needs

The installation of smart meters Island-wide could help Manx Utilities control usage if there's too much pressure on the grid.

That's according to the authority's chair, Tim Johnston, who described them as a 'big building block' in planning for the future.

Whilst giving evidence to the Environment and Infrastructure Policy Review Committee this week, Mr Johnston stated peak demand on the Island at the moment is 75 mega-watts - which is less than when the power station was constructed.

But, he admitted that the transition to a greener lifestyle, including an increase in electric vehicles on Island, will likely push up demand and see the authority having to be more creative.
