Social survey makes for gloomy reading

Inequality perceived to be on the rise

The results are in from a major government research project, covering almost every facet of Manx life.

The Isle of Man Social Attitudes Survey 2016 was commissioned by the Cabinet Office, and carried out by think tank Island Global Research earlier this year.

Over 2,100 residents aged between 15 and 91 were asked about everything from employment and financial security, to national pride and dietary habits.

Among the key findings are a sense of gloom surrounding the economy and national politics - half of residents believe wealth inequality is on the rise.

And with an election looming, only a third of respondents say they have confidence in Tynwald.

Just half of us feel a sense of closeness to our town or village, compared to three-quarters in northern England.

Elsewhere, the survey shows the average Manx man drinks 20 alcoholic units - or 10 pints - in a week.

We're also fatter than other Crown Dependency residents, with a noticeably higher rate of obesity than people in Jersey.
