Roads open and services restored

All roads around South Quay are now open again following yesterday's (Wed) major fire at a warehouse.

Power has also been restored to properties in the area.

Fire services were called out just before 2.30pm to a blaze at a property belonging to flooring firm, Chardaid Developments.

Concerns over toxic fumes from the fire and thick smoke led to the closure of the entire south quay for some time, with residents and workers in the area being urged to keep doors and windows closed.

The incident was complicated by the fact that there was an electrical sub-station in the area of the fire, which prevented crews from applying large amounts of water during the initial stages, before power could be isolated by the MUA.

Coastguards were also deployed to control the spread of potentially-contaminated water in the nearby harbour.

Police were on points duty around the capital to try and help the flow of traffic as the incident continued through evening rush hour.

Whilst there was extensive damage to property, happily no-one was hurt in the incident.

Fire services finally cleared the area around 9.30pm last night.

The Chief Constable, Gary Roberts, has praised the 'great work by great people' in dealing with such an 'unusual' event and police have thanked the majority of motorists and members of the public for their patience whilst the incident was dealt with.
