Ferry operator says new developments could lead to more cancelled sailings
The Steam Packet Company says it's concerned about the cumulative effect of windfarms in the Irish Sea.
It comes as feedback is being sought from the Manx public on the Morecambe and Morgan windfarm proposals, which could impact the ferry operator's Liverpool route.
The Government-owned operator insists it's not opposed to offshore windfarms, but does worry about the impact on the 'lifeline routes' serving the Isle of Man.
The Steam Packet says its concerns include the safety of navigation for ships when sailing through windfarm corridors.
It adds that a lack of open sea for navigating during rough weather is likely to increase the risk of cancellations, impacting passengers, hauliers and the wider population of the Island through delay to the delivery of goods.
The operator also highlights the impact on the environment, stating that having to sail extra distance to avoid the windfarms will mean more fuel is used, increasing CO2 emissions.
The Steam Packet has confirmed it is in active consultation with various project developers.
