Special RNLI service commemorates founder

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution will celebrate the life and works of its founder in Douglas today.

A special service is being held at St George’s church to honour Sir William Hillary, who founded the organisation 190 years ago.

The service starts at 3pm and will be conducted by the Archdeacon of Man, the Venerable Andrew Brown and Bishop Robert Paterson.

Gareth Morrison, the RNLI’s Operations Manager for Ireland North and the Isle of Man will lay a wreath on the tomb of Sir William and Lady Hillary in the churchyard afterwards.
