Spill in Peel could be 'discharge' from boat

DoI applying dispersant to break it down

A suspected oil spill in Peel is likely to be 'discharge' from a boat or from surface water drains.

The Department of Infrastructure says it's unrelated to works that have been recently undertaken or to a recently re-floated vessel.

Due to the low flow of water through the harbour, and the settled conditions, the fuel has spread widely on the surface of the water.

The DoI, which has responsibility for harbours, says the evaporation rate of spills like this is 'fairly rapid' and with the application of a dispersant will be 'broken down quickly'.
