Sports coach jailed for indecent assault on minors

Youngest victim was 12 years old

A sports coach has been sentenced to five years and nine months in prison after being found guilty of indecent assault against three boys.

Dean Thomas Wales committed the offences between November 2003 and November 2017, against victims aged 16, 15 and 12.

The Court of General Gaol Delivery heard Wales used his position as a sports coach to build trust, as well as other grooming behaviours such as giving them alcohol, to facilitate the assaults.

Wales was also charged with making both still and moving indecent images.

Detective Inspector Bobby Syme from the Public Protection Unit said the case should 'reassure the public that no matter who the individual is or what position they hold or have held, if a sexual complaint is made it will be investigated'.

He's been speaking to Chris Cave:

Rachael Braidwood of the Prosecutions Division said "the sentence of the court reflects the very serious nature of this case and the predatory nature of the offending.

"The defendant targeted victims who were vulnerable in order to commit the crimes", she added.

Both paid tribute to the courage of those who came forward for their bravery.

If you have been the victim of a sexual assault you are asked to contact the Public Protection Unit on 631499.
