State funeral: Today's proceedings

Her Majesty the Queen to be laid to rest

Queen Elizabeth II will be laid to rest beside her late husband Prince Philip during a private service later today following her state funeral.

Tens of thousands of people have travelled to London and Windsor to see the state funeral of Her Majesty the Queen.

Westminster Abbey will be filled with two thousand dignitaries, world leaders and select members of the public.

Here's everything you need to know about today's proceedings. 

8.00:  Westminster Abbey is opened

Westminster Abbey's doors will open and guests invited to the service will begin to take their seats.

10.35: Queen's coffin leaves Westminster Hall

The Queen's coffin will be lifted from Westminster Hall and taken to the Royal Navy's state gun carriage.

10.44: Procession to Westminster Abbey

Nearly 100 members of the Royal Navy will pull the state gun carriage to Westminster Abbey alongside 6,000 armed forces personnel.

King Charles III, his siblings and grandson's will follow the procession.

Behind them the Queen's son-in-law Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, her cousin the Duke of Gloucester and her nephew the Earl of Snowdon.

10.52: Procession arrives at the Abbey

Led by Pipes and Drums of Scottish and Irish Regiments, the Brigade of Gurkhas, and the Royal Air Force and numbering 200 musicians, the coffin will arrive at the Abbey and will be carried inside for the service.

11.00: Funeral service begins

The Dean of Westminster will conduct the service, with UK Prime Minister Liz Truss and the Secretary General of the Commonwealth to read Lessons.

The Archbishop of York, the Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster, the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland and the Free Churches Moderator will say prayers.

The Archbishop of Canterbury will give the sermon and commendation.  The Dean of Westminster will pronounce the blessing.

11.55: Last Post and two-minute silence

As the ceremonial proceedings come to a close, the Last Post will sound, followed by a two-minute silence.

The silence will be observed across the service, the entirety of the United Kingdom and the Crown Dependencies.

12.15: Procession to Wellington Arch

Another procession will take place to Wellington Arch.

Wellington Arch was built as an original entrance to Buckingham Palace, which later became a victory arch proclaiming Wellington's defeat of Napoleon.

13.00: Procession arrives at the Arch

At Wellington Arch the coffin will be transferred from the gun carriage to the state hearse to travel to Windsor.

A royal salute and the national anthem will be played as the hearse departs.

15.06: State hearse arrives in Windsor

Windsor Castle is a royal residence in which the Queen would often stay.

The Castle is the largest inhabited castle in the world and the longest-occupied palace in Europe.

15.10: Procession up Long Walk to St George's Chapel

A procession led by a dismounted attachment of the Household Cavalry, with pipers and drums and a band from the Coldstream Guards.

Members of the Queen's personal staff will follow.

15.40: Royal Family join procession

Charles and members of the Royal Family will join the procession in the Quadrangle at Windsor Castle.

A guard of honour from the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards will be formed, and the Queen's coffin will carried up the West Steps into the Chapel.

16.00: Committal service

The Dean of Windsor will lead the service, which will be attended by around 800 people including members of the Queen's Household and Windsor estate staff.

19.30: The burial

The Queen's final resting place will be the King George VI memorial chapel, a small annex to the main chapel at Windsor.

Prince Philip was initially laid to rest in the Royal Vault at St George's Chapel.

He will now be moved to the memorial chapel to join the Queen, where they will remain.
