Storms expected to sweep Island

Weather forecasters are warning about strong winds and high tides today.

Strong to gale force westerly winds this morning and afternoon could gust up to 60 mph, with severe gales in exposed locations taking windspeeds up to around 70mph.

There’s also the possibility of snow on higher ground this afternoon, leading to difficult driving conditions.

All ferry crossings today have been cancelled apart from this evening’s 7.45pm Ben my Chree from Douglas to Heysham – although the Steam Packet Company is warning that, too, may be affected.

A decision is expected at around 5pm.

Coastguards are also warning about waves washing over beaches and exposed roads this afternoon.

Areas most at risk are Marine Parade and Fenella beach in Peel, although some parts of Port St Mary, Bay ny Carrickey and Castletown Bay may also be affected to a lesser extent.
