Strike ballot vote 'disappointing'

Post Office criticises union

The chair of Isle of Man Post Office says it is 'disappointing' staff are contemplating industrial action.

Members of the Communication Workers' Union, which represents postal workers, voted yesterday to ballot on a possible walkout - amid concerns over what officials have branded 'horrific cuts'.

The latest move follows months of negotiations between the Post Office and CWU, over possible changes to staff pensions and postal services.

In a statement, Post Office bosses have confirmed they have presented staff with a 'complex set' of proposed reforms, which they insist protect wages and pensions.

But the board maintains the business must save money somehow, following a financial loss blamed on a 47% decline in letter volumes in recent years.

A public consultation on the changes is closing tomorrow (2 October) - with the Post Office today saying it is ultimately up to customers to decide how services should be run in future.

It says the responses will be listened to, and negotiations will continue with the union.
