Student disagrees with idea of 16-year-old politicians

Commissioner thinks age restriction should be dropped from 18 to 16

A student from St Ninian's High School thinks being a politician at 16 would be too much responsibility, too young.

Chairman of Braddan Commissioners Andrew Jessopp has suggested the age restrictions for people wanting to run to be an MHK or commissioner should be lowered from 18 to 16.

He feels young people have showcased their leadership through a number of recent political demonstrations outside parliament.

Mr Jessopp said the change would be only right, given that 16-year-olds are allowed to vote here.
