Study shows employers are unaware of legal responsibilities

An independent study has revealed many employers on the Island are unaware of their legal responsibilities when it comes to employing young people.

Conducted free of charge by a research group from the University of the West of Scotland, the study found some children work later in the evening than the law permits while others carry out jobs that go against health and safety regulations.

The Department of Education and Children is now on a mission to educate employers about the 2001 Education Act.

If found to be breaking the law, they can be fined up to £5000, but Head of Legal and Administrative Services John Gill says the focus at the moment is education:
