Surprise resignation over bus timetable

Angry bus users have called for action over the Island’s new bus network.

Just under 150 members of the public, the vast majority from Douglas, attended a public meeting at the Manx Legion Club last night (Monday) to voice their concerns.

Those present included a number of bus drivers and members of the House of Keys.

And they were stunned when East Douglas MHK Brenda Cannell announced she was resigning from the Leisure Division of the Department of Community, Culture and Leisure, which was responsible for the plans (first part of attached audio file):

It's the second time Mrs Cannell has resigned from a government department in 14 years, and she has also been sacked on two occasions.

At the end of the meeting, the public called for the old timetable to be re-introduced and issued a vote of no confidence in Leisure Minister David Cretney.

Organiser of the meeting, North Douglas MHK John Houghton is adamant that's what should happen (second part of audio file):

Mr Cretney didn't attend the meeting but is promising to tackle any major problems (third part of audio file):

There is more on this story on Tuesday morning's Mandate.
