Taxi driver caught speeding after trying to help TT tourist

38-year-old clocked travelling at 56mph in 30 zone

A taxi driver who was caught speeding during TT week has been fined £350 after blaming his offending on trying to help a tourist.

Jabrane Moutiq, of Malvern Road, was clocked doing 56mph in a 30mph zone in Crosby, at 5.19am, on 8 June.

The 38-year-old was travelling to pick up a visitor from St John’s Football Club who was at risk of missing their ferry back to the UK after another operator failed to show.

At Douglas Courthouse this week Moutiq was handed seven penalty points and ordered to pay prosecution costs of £50.

In a letter to the court he said the taxi industry had experienced its busiest time of year and was struggling due to a shortage or workers and the knock-on effect of numerous bus cancellations.

Urging the court not to disqualify him from driving he added: “I am much more mindful of my surroundings and the rules of the road.”
