Thief spared jail after being caught stealing coat

40-year-old had discarded security tags in shoe display

A Ballasalla man has been spared jail after stealing a designer coat from a shop he was banned from entering.

Jonathan Edward Myers, of Glashen Terrace, was caught with the Canada Goose jacket in Flannels on 13 August.

Shop staff spotted the 40-year-old carrying the item, valued at £1,150, towards the exit.

When they stopped him they found the security tags had been removed and discarded in the shoe display.

During sentencing at Douglas Courthouse the court was told Myers was on a Shopwatch ban at the time.

He also asked for an attempted theft from Boots to be taken into consideration.

Myers’ advocate told the court prior to the offence his client had been to the UK to attend a rehab facility but it had been unsuccessful and he was offending to pay for drugs to self-medicate.

Urging the court to consider probation input he told the court Myers was now heroin free.

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes described the theft as ‘pre-meditated’ adding: “It was an offence doomed to failure.”

Agreeing that previous custodial sentences hadn’t worked she urged Myers to continue addressing his substance abuse telling him: “I am prepared to take that risk and not send you to custody today.”

Imposing a 14-week custodial sentence, suspended for two years, and a two-year suspended sentence supervision order she also ordered Myers to pay prosecution costs of £125.
