Three saved from boat after 'difficult' rescue operation

Boat went on to sink in Bay Ny Carrickey

Three people have been rescued after the boat they were on got into difficulty near Port St Mary.

The local lifeboat and Port Erin Coastguard were launched just before 6am this morning to help the vessel which was in Bay Ny Carrickey.

Due to the proximity of the boat to Carrick Rock, and the onshore heavy swell, the crew members were brought onto the lifeboat and then taken safely ashore.

Their boat was left at anchor but broke free and was swept across the rock before being blown back into the water where she sank.

No debris has yet been spotted.

In a post on social media Port Erin Coastguard said: "Well done to Port St Mary Lifeboat for a difficult rescue with three lives saved."

Police say they’ve received a number of 999 calls regarding the boat which has now been spotted upturned.

They have thanked concerned members of the public but say it is being dealt with and there is nobody ‘in danger any longer’.

People are urged not to call the emergency number as this will delay the answering of other calls.
