Colin Finney 'made the organisation what it is today'

Tributes have been paid to the Isle of Man's former Chief Coastguard, Colin Finney, following his death.

Colin held the role for 21 years and was appointed Operations Manager of harbours and coastguard for the Department of Infrastructure in 2010.

The Isle of Man Coastguard says Colin made the organisation what it is today, and the establishment owes him a debt of gratitude for his dedication to the service.

'A kind, wise gentle man'

The Church of England Diocese of Sodor and Man says 'Colin began his career as a 15-year-old in 1969 when he joined the Royal Navy, working in the communications branch. After joining HM Coastguard, Colin was posted in Isle of Lewis and Greenock before returning to the Island in 1983, where he was stationed in Ramsey before moving to Castletown.

'It was here that Colin began worshipping at St Mary’s on the Harbour where he dedicated many years of service and he became a licensed Lay Reader and also Churchwarden. His professional organisational skills were put to good use in the life of the parish and community and led to him being appointed as Warden of Readers and an Honorary Canon of the Cathedral, Peel.

'Colin will always be remembered by all who knew him as a kind, wise gentle man who cared deeply for others. He had a gently mischievous sense of humour seen by many who enjoyed his warm and loyal friendship.

'Many will miss him, not least his family and close friends and for them we ask your prayers. Colin a good and faithful servant, may he rest in peace and rise in glory as his legacy continues to inspire.'
