'Tussle' with police sees woman end up with 'significant' injury

42-year-old admits being drunk and disorderly

A St Johns woman has been advised not to drink alcohol after a drunken incident, and subsequent ‘tussle’ with police, saw her sustain a knee-injury.

Mandy Louise Killey, of Tynwald Close, admitted being drunk and disorderly and resisting a police officer in execution of their duty during an appearance at Douglas Courthouse.

The 42-year-old was arrested in the car park, at Campion Court in Peel, just after 8.30pm on 15 September.

She’d gone to the home of her ex-partner but wasn’t welcome – by the time officers arrived she was shouting and swearing and, as she was being arrested, she kicked a police sergeant in the leg.  

Killey’s advocate told the court his client had come off worse after suffering a ‘very significant’ injury which required surgery, off-Island hospital treatment and the possibility of a new kneecap.

“She does feel a sense of shame and embarrassment,” he told the court: “Things have escalated out of control.”

Fining Killey £600, and ordering her to pay prosecution costs of £50, Deputy High Bailiff Rachael Braidwood told her: “You’ve been shouting obscenities for all to hear – it’s unacceptable behaviour.

“You have very much come out the worse – perhaps you shouldn’t drink at all.”
