Two schools seek bike shelters to encourage student cycling

Application part of aim to increase active travel on Isle of Man

Bike racks could be installed at two of the Island's secondary schools in a bid to encourage more pupils to cycle to school.

Planning permission is being sought for bicycle storage at Ballakermeen High School and Ramsey Grammar School as part of the active travel strategy.

If given the go-ahead, the Douglas school would have enough space for 30 bikes to be left during the schoolday, while Ramsey is seeking permission for two 20-bike shelters, plus additional space for staff bicycles.

The facilities would also include lockers for helmets.

The aim of the Government initiative is to have 20% of the Island's population using active travel by the next census in 2021.
