Rate to be set at £12.86 from April

Tynwald has backed the chief minister's new approach to increasing the minimum wage.

Last night, members voted in support of an amendment from Alfred Cannan to set the rate at £12.86 from 1 April instead of the previously approved 9.9 percent rise to £13.46.

The court also supported calls for Treasury to increase personal allowances in next month's Budget.

Earlier this week, Alex Allinson was sacked from the role of treasury minister, with Mr Cannan citing the need to slow the increase of the minimum wage as the reason for the move.

18 MHKs voted in favour of Mr Cannan's proposals with six against, with the Legislative Council 5-2 in favour.
