Tynwald hailed for quality by Kenyan Auditor-General

Visit to Manx Parliament inspires

Tynwald has been hailed for its "quality" by the Auditor-General of the Republic of Kenya.

Edward Ouko was reflecting on his visit to the Manx Parliament ahead of his engagement as guest speaker at the Isle of Man Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association’s (CPA) dinner to mark Commonwealth Day.

During his visit, Mr Ouko met members of Tynwald’s public accounts committee (PAC) and had a tour of the Legislative Buildings.

He said it had been interesting to learn something of the long tradition – and size – of Tynwald, which he said was in sharp contrast to the Parliament of Kenya, which he described as "a work in progress" and where there are some 400 representatives.

The Kenyan AG added that he believed the Kenyan parliament could draw on the idea that "small is good" and that would help them re-focus and while Tynwald may be small in numbers, it’s the quality that makes it great.
