Tynwald says 'no' to Aspden at bar

A bid to call the chief executive of the Financial Supervision Commission to the bar of Tynwald has failed.

Michael MHK Cannan wanted John Aspden to answer questions about the collapse of Kaupthing Singer and Friedlander, and any technical issues relating to the revised depositors' compensation scheme which is due to go before the court tomorrow.

However, the idea was rejected before it even became a subject for debate, with voting 19-13 against.

Meanwhile, the sitting of Tynwald was adjourned until 10.30am tomorrow, after the government offices fire alarm went off, at about 4.50 this afternoon.

Proceedings were halted in the chamber and the President, Noel Cringle, decided to 'call it a day', rather than wait for the hour or so it was expected to take to fix the fault.
