Tynwald to discuss Shoprite sale

Urgent questions tabled for first sitting back

Tynwald will discuss the recent sale of Shoprite to Tesco next week.

Three urgent questions have been tabled for the first sitting back after the summer recess.

Douglas North MHK David Ashford will ask the Chief Minister: 'In light of the merger of Shoprite and Tesco what assurances Government is seeking in relation to the continued use of local suppliers’ goods within the current Shoprite stores; when any part of Government was first informed of the merger; and why regulations under Part 6 of the Competition Act 2021 are not in place.'

Arbory, Castletown and Malew MHK Jason Moorhouse will ask: 'If he will make a statement on the proposed takeover of Shoprite and the implications of this on local producers, current employees and customer choice.'

Finally, Douglas South MHK Claire Christian will ask: 'What assessment the Government has made of the impact on jobs and small businesses of Tesco buying Shoprite.'

Manx Radio will as always be broadcasting proceedings live from the Tynwald chamber on our AM 1368 frequency.
