Tyre fire on Great Meadow

Dispose of waste correctly say Fire services

Commercial businesses are being reminded they have a responsibility to dispose of waste safely.

It's after fire services attended a blaze at Great Meadow in Castletown.

The call-out came around 4.40pm on Friday (17th) afternoon after reports of thick black smoke in the area.

It was found a bonfire which contained a large number of old vehicle tyres had been lit.

The fire was extinguished and crews remained at the scene for around 45 minutes.

Fire services say waster producers have a responsibility under the Public Health Act 1990 to dispose of waste correctly - and burning is not safe or acceptable as it allows the particulates in smoke to escape into the atmosphere.

Failure to comply with this duty of care can result in an unlimited fine.
