Union Mills man drove while more than four times above cannabis limit

Tait has been banned from driving for two years and fined £1,330 for two offences

A man who had more than four times the permitted amount of cannabis is his system while driving has been banned from the roads for two years.

Matthew Tait from Union Mills pleaded guilty to driving while over the limit and possessing cannabis during an appearance at Douglas Courthouse.

On 11 February, police stopped Tait on Braddan Road in Strang for vehicle checks when they noticed he had glazed eyes and there was a smell of cannabis coming from his vehicle.

The 22-year-old admitted he'd smoked a joint earlier that day, and a roadside test indicated he was over the limit.

A blood sample later confirmed a reading of 9.1 micrograms per litre of blood - the legal limit is 2.

Officers also found cannabis in a tub in his car, along with a pre-rolled cigarette, with a combined street value of £46.

As well as disqualifying Tait from driving for two years, Deputy High Bailiff Rachael Braidwood fined him £1,000 for the driving offence, £330 for possession and ordered him to pay £125 in prosecution costs.

He'll also have to take and pass an extended driving test at the end of his ban.
