Unions repeat call for chief minister to intervene in dispute

NAHT to begin industrial action next week

Teaching unions in dispute with the education department have repeated a plea for the chief minister to intervene and help try and find a solution.

The NASUWT, NAHT and ASCL are prepared to take industrial action, with a meeting due to take place on Tuesday to decide just what that will entail.

But they have also said they are prepared to continue negotiations with the department to avoid that happening, and have been clear regarding their demands.

Carol Walsh is the Island's representative for the NAHT:

ASCL's rep, Susan Moore, said the union's members were also keen to sort things out before they escalated:

Meanwhile, if the education minister doesn't know what teaching unions want, he hasn't been listening.

That's according to the national secretary of the union that's starting industrial action next week.

NAHT members will take action short of a strike from Thursday after a ballot of members as part of their ongoing pay dispute with the education department.

Graham Cregeen told Manx Radio this week the unions hadn't made their demands clear, but Rob Kelsall insists that not the case:

How would a teacher's strike affect you? For some parents it can be a real challenge trying to find alternative arrangements when the schools aren't open.

Manx Radio's Lewis Foster spoke to some parents performing the school-run yesterday, to see how they would feel about potential strike action:
