Union supports 2.5 per cent increase in contributions

Members of Unite the Union are overwhelmingly in favour of proposed changes to the Government Unified Scheme (GUS).

The ballot asked members if they wished to support proposed changes to the pension scheme - aimed at making it both sustainable and fair.

It sees transitional increases from 2018 to 2020 of 2.5 per cent in members' contributions, with a 6 per cent reduction in future benefits.

The ballot closed at midday yesterday, and the result was 82.4 per cent in favour with 17.6 per cent opposed.

The results of a ballot of Prospect Union members is yet to be announced.

Regional Officer for Unite, Eric Holmes, says he believes the result should give some re-assurance to the Council of Ministers as they prepare to debate the reforms in Tynwald next week:
