Urgent legislation concerning gas disconnections to go to HoK today

Busy last sitting of 2023 for Manx politicians

Politicians will be asked to support urgent legislation which could stop people from getting disconnected from their gas supply.

The Council of Ministers wants powers to prevent disconnection in certain circumstances.

Cabinet Office Minister Kate Lord-Brennan will attempt to seek support for the Gas Regulation (Amendment) Bill 2023 in the House of Keys today (19 December).

If it completes its passage through the Keys, it will then be considered in the Legislative Council.

It’s one of three potentially contentious issues for the final sitting of 2023.

Douglas Central MHK Chris Thomas will ask an urgent question about the Steam Packet.

He wants an update, from the treasury minister, about the ongoing dispute over changes to terms and conditions.

Yesterday a union which represents officers confirmed its members want to take industrial action.

Twelve further questions have been submitted – half of which have been tabled by Arbory, Castletown and Malew MHK Jason Moorhouse.

You can find the full question paper HERE.

And the Isle of Man Constitution Bill – which would see the bishop’s voting rights in the Legislative Council and Tynwald removed - will reach the clauses stage.

The House of Keys will sit at 10am, while LegCo sits from 10.30am.

You can listen to the Keys sitting live on Manx Radio’s AM 1368 frequency or online by clicking HERE.
