Urgent need for foster carers says children's champion

More than 90 currently in care of health department

Recruiting foster carers is a 'major issue' according to the Island's children's champion, MHK Tim Baker.

There are more than 90 children and young people currently in the care of the health department, from nought to 18-years-old.

The fostering service became a governmental in-house provison last October.

Mr Baker says since then, the emphasis has been on laying new foundations for the service:

There are 50 care leavers who regularly receive support, and approximately 25 at any given time over the age of 21 who return for support.

Debbie Brayshaw is the Director of Children and Family Services:

Sue (not her real name) has been fostering for ten years on the Island, and is currently fostering a 15-year-old and a 15-week-old baby.

Alex Wotton spoke to her at her home about what it's like to be a foster carer:

Well that's what it's like being a carer, but what about the child?
