Minister discusses work permits ahead of suspension debate
In just a few weeks time, the Department for Enterprise will ask politicians for permission to temporarily switch-off the work permit system.
If approved, the system would effectively be scrapped across all industries, but those with criminal convictions would still require a permit regardless.
Some members have previously flagged concerns the move could see an influx of people which the Island might struggle to cope with.
Speaking with Manx Radio's Christian Jones, the Enterprise Minister Tim Johnston says that's simply not the case:
Businesses would instead be required to 'register' a non-Isle of Man worker in place of obtaining a work permit.
It's hoped this process would provide a detailed picture of the Island's workforce and highlight industries with additional skills shortages.
But how would that be policed or regulated?
