Firefighters spend two hours tackling flames
Fire crews spent two hours tackling a large hedge fire that spread due to the weather conditions.
Officers from Douglas and Laxey were called to the scene just after 5.30pm yesterday.
The blaze in the Abbeylands area started as a controlled burn, but a strong wind meant the flames spread, covering a 100m-long area.
The terrain made it difficult for firefighters to tackle, but crews used off-road vehicles to get water to the scene, preventing the fire spreading further.
The incident has resulted in the loss of a significant length of hedge, which the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture says provides nesting space for birds at this time of year.
Those planning a controlled burn are advised to contact the Emergency Services Joint Control Room beforehand on 697327 and check if the weather could have an impact.
