That's viewed as either the darkest or shortest day of the year.
It also means that the days will start to get longer from now on, even if it's just by a few seconds or minute at a time.
The sun will rise today is at 8.36am and set at 3.56pm - tomorrow (Mon 23) there is a minute longer until the sun dips under the horizon.
