Woman falsely claimed more than £14,000 benefits money

Her father filled in the forms after she moved to UK

A woman who moved to the UK to live with her boyfriend falsely claimed more than £14,000 in benefits by getting her father to fill in the forms.

Forty-eight-year-old Rachel Jayne Hay of Urley Path and 72-year-old William Peter Hay of Heather Crescent, both in Douglas, appeared before magistrates at Douglas Courthouse.

Miss Hay pleaded guilty to four charges of making false representations to obtain benefits and one of failing to inform officials about a change in circumstances.

Her father admitted three charges of making false representations to obtain benefits and one of making articles for use in frauds.

Prosecution advocate Hazel Carroon told the court Hay had begun claiming income support in 2017, but in late 2020 she moved to Gorton in Manchester.

She asked her father to forge her signature and fill in forms in order for her claim to continue, but was caught out when officials began investigating following a tip-off.

Her bank statements showed she’d lived in the UK for more than a year, and when officials visited her home they were told she lived off-Island and treated the house as a holiday home.

The court heard in total she’d been overpaid £14,755.

Magistrates bailed both in the sum of £500 while the probation service completes pre-sentencing reports, and the duo will next appear on 19 May.
