Woman overpaid £26,000 in benefits

32-year-old receives suspended jail sentence

A Ramsey woman who didn't tell benefits officials her boyfriend had moved in with her was overpaid more than £26,000.

Thirty-two-year-old Sarah Leanne Corkill of Westbourne Road appeared before Deputy High Bailiff James Brooks.

She'd previously pleaded guilty to a total of six charges of making false representations to obtain benefits.

Prosecution advocate Roger Kane told the hearing she'd begun claiming Employed Person’s Allowance in 2014.

When her boyfriend moved into her home in 2018, she didn't tell benefits staff.

As a result, she was paid £26,167.17 she wasn’t entitled to before an investigation into her claim was opened and surveillance on her home found her boyfriend was living there.

Corkill's advocate Kate Alexander told the hearing her client's partner had taken advantage of her and she’d previously been of good character.

Mr Brooks jailed her for a total of 14 weeks, suspended for 18 months, and Corkill was ordered to pay £50 towards prosecution costs.
