Woman spared jail after wrongly claiming £50K in benefits

34-year-old admitted nine offences

A Ramsey woman who claimed more than £50,000 in benefits she wasn't entitled to has been handed a suspended jail term.

Sara Louise Adamson, of Close Thunnag, appeared at Douglas Courthouse.

The thirty-four-year-old admitted two counts of failing to inform benefits staff of a change in her circumstances and seven of making false representations to obtain benefits.

The court heard single mum Adamson had started claiming Employed Person's Allowance in 2014.

In February this year benefits staff were tipped off she was living with her partner - investigations showed he'd moved in with her in 2018.

Staff also discovered she'd failed to declare income she'd made by working for the coroner of Ayre and Garff.

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes heard she'd been overpaid £50,395 in total.

She imposed a 26-week jail term, suspended for two years, and ordered Adamson to pay £50 towards prosecution costs.
