World beater stars on new set of stamps

Lewis Hamilton’s Formula One World Championship success is celebrated with a set of six stamps, issued by the Isle of Man Post Office today.

They feature images of his championship victory, and come with a review of the achievement by retired Formula One commentator Murray Walker.

Chief executive of Hamilton’s Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team Martin Whitmarsh says the Island's motorsport heritage and enthusiasm for racing makes it a fitting place for the stamps to be issued.

Philatelic Bureau Manager Dot Tilbury says the release of the stamps marks the fruition of a long-term project (play attached audio file):

On Manx Radio yesterday, Dot revealed Lewis Hamilton had been invited to the Island by Isle of Man Post.

However, he politely declined to come over, saying he was busy testing cars in preparation for the 2009 Formula One season.
