Worried staff 'picket' members of Tynwald

Members of Tynwald will gain first hand experience of the concern felt by Steam Packet employees, over the rival freight service being operated by Mezeron, when they arrive for today's sitting.

Representatives of three maritime unions - Nautilus, the RMT and Unite - will 'picket' MHKs and MLCs, with banners and placards, when they arrive at the legislative buildings.

The Steam Packet's 300 Isle of Man-based staff are growing increasingly concerned for their jobs, and the Island's ferry lifeline, as the commercial pressure faced by the company increases.

Chris Bowen, who is first officer on the Ben-my-Chree and spokesman for officers' union Nautilus, believes it's already time for the politicians to get involved, although he admits there has been plenty of positive reaction to the Mezeron service:
