Young people leaving IOM with 'no intention to return'

18-year-old student says attitude in gov't needs to change

An MHK says 50 per cent of all young people are leaving the Island with no intention to return, according to an Onchan MHK.

Rob Callister believes the reasons for this include a 'lack of job opportunities' on the Island.

He says the job market is so competitive:

If employers are creating an overly competitive atmosphere, would this stimulate the market and incentivise pursuing further education or apprenticeships?

Sam Roe is a student at Ballakermeen High School who believes the lack of effort being put into keeping young people on Island is the driving force.

For many, finishing school and heading off to university is the start of their lives as independent adults.

As such, following the completion of their respective further education, like many, they'll want a job and security.

He says any changes made won't have the desired effect unless the government's attitude changes:
