Alexandra Cowley says housing, youth retention and political engagement will be central concerns
Ahead of the Isle of Man’s next general election in a year’s time, a member of the Tynwald Youth Select Committee says housing and youth retention will be key issues for younger voters.
Alexandra Cowley believes the availability and affordability of housing remain among the Island’s most pressing challenges, particularly for those starting out in adult life.
She also highlights the importance of retaining young people, suggesting that while opportunities and incentives exist, they are not being used to their full potential.
Miss Cowley acknowledges that government has made efforts to increase youth involvement, but said the needs of younger people can sometimes feel less pressing in an ageing society.
She also reflected on political engagement, suggesting schools could play a greater role in encouraging debate through PSHE lessons.
Asked what advice she would give to candidates seeking to connect with younger voters, Miss Cowley said politicians should not overlook the youth vote:
“Keep in mind that we might be a smaller proportion than adult or elderly voters, it’s still a vote that counts. Go and speak to people and get involved in the younger community to see what young people like.”
Her comments come as the Youth Select Committee prepares to publish its report on housing, based on evidence gathered last year.
The Isle of Man General Election takes place on 24 September 2026, with 24 seats to be contested across 12 constituencies.
