Youth helps sustain Douglas branch of Legion

Fears an Island branch of the British Legion could be forced to close due to falling membership have been allayed - thanks to support from young people.

An emergency general meeting of the Legion's Douglas branch was called last night, to fill official roles in the organisation and form a new committee.

The charity provides support to former members of the British armed forces and their families.

But with the majority of members aged over 75, numbers have dwindled.

The organiser of last night's meeting Hilary Cleverly says her call for help produced 'a very pleasing turnout' - and members of different ages and backgrounds have offered their services.

EITHER: Mrs Cleverly says injured servicemen returning from recent and current conflicts will need the Legion's support for years to come:

CART:  83432

OR: Mrs Cleverly says the new committee has attracted new young blood:

CART:  83433
