Youth parliament plans have disappeared - MLC

Conversations to resume this month

Plans to create a Manx Youth Parliament have disappeared according to an MLC.

Tanya August-Hanson presented a motion in 2019 which led to the Tynwald Management Committee being asked to investigate how one could be set up.

The committee said it wasn't well placed to work out how members would be selected, funding or what the aims would be.

It also said it wasn't sure how sittings would be structured but felt a youth parliament should be able to cooperate with, but be independent of, Tynwald.

The organisers were asked to show how they would ensure fair access and representation for all young people.

Miss August-Hanson says a plan was due to be presented in March 2020 but didn't materialise:

Now Miss August-Hanson has told Manx Radio she'll be meeting with head students, from across the Island's schools, to progress the idea at the end of this month.

Her hope is that a student-led approach can be found.
