ATHLETICS: Astin and Mayers shine in Valencia

Report by David Griffiths

There were several Manx runners in road running action off the Island over the weekend.

In the warmth of Valencia in Spain, Gemma Astin continued her impressive comeback to racing with a 10k time of 34.37 to finish 36th woman in a field that was world-class at the front.

Gemma's younger sister Sarah was also in the race having been selected to run for England - as she will also do in a cross-country international this coming weekend. Sarah had felt unwell the day before, but lined up for the race. Unfortunately she was caught up in a huge pile-up on the start line after some of the leading runners fell right at the start, and Sarah was one of many who ended up on the ground. She was unscathed and continued, but pulled in after about 6k deciding to save herself for next weekend's race in Belgium.

Also in the Valencia race was Caroline Mayers, who clocked a time of 40.33 to finish 160th woman and fourth in the women’s 50 age group.
